What fills the heart

Perhaps the real point of life is simply to wear us down until we have no choice but to start abandoning our defenses. We learn that the way things are is simply the way they are meant to be right now, and then, suddenly, at long last, we catch a glimpse of the abundance in the moment – abundance even in the face of things falling apart.

In our hands

What we call fate does not come into us from the outside, but emerges from us. It is only because so many people have not absorbed and transformed their fates while they were living in them that they have not realized what was emerging from them; it was so alien to them that, in their confusion and fear, they thought it must have entered them at the very moment they became aware of it, for they swore they had never before found anything like that inside them. Just as people for a long time had a wrong idea about the sun’s motion, they are even now wrong about the motion of what is to come. The future stands still but we move in infinite space.

An endless longing

File:Porto Covo July 2011-6.jpg

If you want to build a ship,

don’t drum up people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work,

but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.

A pilgrim soul

mullaghrellan woods

In the hero stories, the call to go on a journey takes the form of a loss, an error, a wound, an unexplainable longing, or a sense of a mission.

When any of these happens to us, we are being summoned to make a transition.

It will always mean leaving something behind,…

The paradox here is that loss is a path to gain.

Gratitude

When a person doesn’t have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity. A person can almost be defined by his or her attitude toward gratitude. For me, every hour is grace. And I feel gratitude in my heart each time I can meet someone and look at his or her smile.

We need to give up what no longer works

and find new ways of being

that keep us close to what matters
