Of all ridiculous things the most ridiculous seems to me, to be busy
— to be someone who is brisk about his food and his work.

We all want to be famous people,
and the moment we want to be something we are no longer free.

Today I’m flying low and I’m
not saying a word.
I’m letting all the voodoos of ambition sleep.
The world goes on as it must,
the bees in the garden rumbling a little,
the fish leaping, the gnats getting eaten.
And so forth.
But I’m taking the day off.
Quiet as a feather.
I hardly move though really I’m traveling
a terrific distance.
Stillness. One of the doors
into the temple.

Calm in quiet times is not real calm:
When you can be calm in the midst of activity, this is the true state of nature.
Happiness in time of comfort is not real happiness
When you can be happy in the midst of challenges, then you see the true potential of the mind.

Music is pleasing not only because of the sound but because of the silence that is in it: without the alternation of sound and silence there would be no rhythm. If we strive to be happy by filling in the silences of life with sound, productive by turning all life’s leisure into work, and real by turning all our being into doing, we will only succeed in producing a hell on earth. If we have no silence, God is not heard in our music.
