Bring your heart to each moment today

The Chinese character for “mindfulness” is nian. It is a combination of two separate characters,  each with its own meaning. The top part of the character means “now” and the bottom part of the character means “heart” or “mind”. Literally, the combined character means the act of experiencing the present moment with your heart. So mindfulness is the moment-to-moment awareness of what is occurring in and around us. By being present and mindful of the present moment, we can accept what is at that moment as it is, allowing change to happen naturally, without struggle, without the usual resistance and judgment that cause us to suffer more.

  1. Karl, I just love this blog! I was googling for the chinese character for Mindfulness – and this is where it led me. I am about to start my first MBSR programme in Co Monaghan, Nd I hope you don’t mind if I copy the character from yours and use it on my blog.
Browsing through just now has been both inspirational (I will be back), humbling (I also have been trying to blog but have posted painfully long and very occasional contributions – you are showing me how to do it!) and delightful – I love cats and Newgrange – probably in that order, so I have been feasting my eyes on your photos.
As you can see, I’m a bit long winded.
I guess ‘thank you, it’s lovely’ would have done.
Warm wishes from Mairead in Ireland
