Your mind is your predicament. It wants to be free of change. Free of pain, free of the obligations of life and death.
But change is law and no amount of pretending will alter that reality.
“Socrates” in Dan Millman, The Way of the Peaceful Warrior.
(A huge thanks to Ted Szi for letting me know the correct origin of this quote)
Hi Karl,
Thank you so much for your blog. I really enjoy your posts.
I don’t want to be “that guy”, but I do think it is important to recognize and properly source quotes, and I’m sure you agree since you list the original authors wherever you can.
This quote is from Dan Millman’s “The Way of the Peaceful Warrior.” In that book this is spoken by his fictional character Socrates, which explains how it has been so widely mis-attributed to Socrates (the Greek philosopher). You can find this quote in Chapter 2, “The Web of Illusion.”
Thanks again for your blog!
Dear Ted,
Sorry slow reply. Was doing some travelling. Not at all, really delighted to get correct attributions, and I was a bit suspicious about this one (didn’t really sound like Socarates to me and most of Socrates comes through Plato anyway). Will correct it on the blog and thanks for your comment, Karl
