We never know the full picture

File:Shes right on track (5400068317).jpg

At the center of his existence man is unknown to himself and must remain so,

for that part of being that calls itself man could be known fully

only if the community of being and its drama in time were finally known as a whole.

Love does that

File:Donkeys at Dooks Mountain - geograph.org.uk - 647635.jpg
All day long the little donkey labours, sometimes
with heavy loads on her back and sometimes just with worries
about the things that bother only donkeys.

And worries, as we know, can be more exhausting
than physical labour.

Once in a while a kind monk comes
to her stable and brings a pear, but more
than that,
he looks into the donkey’s eyes and touches her ears

and for a few seconds the donkey is free
and even seems to laugh,

because love does that.
Love frees.

Not avoiding

 File:14 06 28 Detour Sign Dunedin FL 01.jpg
To see myself and my life as they truly are is joy.
After all the struggle and avoiding and denying and going the other way,
it is deeply satisfying for a second to be there with life as it is.
The satisfaction is the very core of ourselves.
Who we are is beyond words –
just that open power of life,  manifesting constantly in all sorts of interesting things,
even in our own misery and struggles.
The hassle is both horrendous and wholesome.

The wrens nest

File:Troglodyte-sylvain haye.jpg
Wrens
make their nests of fancy threads
and string ends, animals
abandon all their money each year.
What is it that men and women leave?
Harder than wren’s doing, they have
to abandon their longing for the perfect.
The inner nest not made by instinct
will never be quite round,
and each has to enter the nest
made by the other imperfect bird.

Dissolving fear

File:Varanus komodoensis6.jpg

We have no reason to mistrust our world, for it is not against us. Has it terrors, they are our terrors; has it abysses, those abysses belong to us; are dangers at hand, we must try to love them. And if we could only arrange our life according to that principle which counsels us that we must always hold to the difficult, then that which now seems to us the most alien will become what we most trust and find most faithful. How should we be able to forget those ancient myths that are at the beginning of all peoples, the myths about dragons that at the last moment turn into princesses; perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us once beautiful and brave. Perhaps everything terrible is in its deepest being something helpless that wants help from us.

Living without “shoulds” today

File:Children, Hope and Kindness (6908813189).jpg

I have not posted thoughts from Pema Chodron for a while, but was reminded by a close friend as to how inspiring her words can be. She is perhaps the most quoted person on this blog, so here is another idea from her:

Some of us can accept others right where they are a lot more easily than we can accept ourselves. We feel that compassion is reserved for someone else, and it never occurs to us to feel it for ourselves. My experience is,  that by practicing without “shoulds”, we gradually discover our wakefulness and our confidence. Gradually, without any agenda except to be honest and kind, we assume responsibility for being here in this unpredictable world, in this unique moment, in this precious human body.
