The passion in this quote is striking. Each moment is there to be seized, to be discovered in all its depths. We can miss out if we spend our time anticipating moments of happiness elsewhere, or in the future. Indeed, too much focus on our aspirations for our future, our self-development and career paths, can create pressure and lead us into a habit of leaning away from this moment. Often all it succeeds in doing is making us unhappy with who we are.
Seize from each moment
its unique novelty
and do not prepare your joys.
André Gide
I love how this is expressed … thank you SO much for sharing this. “Do not prepare your joys.” “Do not lean away from the moment.” WOW. wow. Thank you. Namaste.
Is this from a book, cause I am definitely looked Mr. GIde up.
Hi Jennifer, because I really find it such a rich quote myself, I am pleased that you like it so much. In some ways it is scary in the challenge it lays down. Don’t know where it is from in Gide’s writings – it is one of those quotes I wrote down over the years in notebooks as I was going along, and which I return to frequently. Love your blog, Best wishes, Karl.
Thank you, Karl. Nice to hear I’m not the only scrap paper quote junkies out there … nah, I know there are LOTS of us;) Peace and beauty, Jenn
