The gift of presence

Some reflections on love, for the day that is in it…

The human soul doesn’t want to be advised or fixed or saved.

It simply wants to be witnessed — to be seen, heard and companioned exactly as it is.

When we make that kind of deep bow to the soul of a suffering person, our respect reinforces the soul’s healing resources, the only resources that can help the sufferer make it through.

Parker Palmer, The Gift of Presence, The Perils of Advice

There is no way into presence except through a love exchange.

  1. Thank you for this precious message and affirmation of a soul’s need. I have been blessed with a dear friend who has companioned me, loved me, supported me through the ups and downs of my life so much that she has become more like a sister than a friend. We have done that for each other in the strength of our faith. It has kept me afloat in the midst of some of the most difficult and darkest times. The gift of her love is something that has brought the deepest healing, the experience of being loved just as I am has transformed how I felt about myself because of some of the things that have happened to me throughout the course of my life.
